Telikom PNG Telephone number changes (20 October 2009)

(Additional reports courtesy Sergiu Rosenzweig, Risto Nykänen)

1995 - 6 to 7 digit national numbers

Papua New Guinea had 6-digit subscriber numbering (without area codes) prior to 1995.

Effective February 1995, 7-digit numbers beginning with 32 and 64 were activated to change 6-digit numbers beginning with 2 and 6 respectively.

Permissive dialling of both formats continued until August 1995, after which recorded message alerts on old format numbers were in effect until November 1995. Presumably the last 5 digits of these numbers were unchanged.

Other information

Telecom regulator: Papua New Guinea Telecommunication Authority.

Carrier: Telikom PNG.
