Listed below are significant numbering change activities as ordered by date, since December 2000. Some news items are likely missing due to incomplete information available, or inadvertence, or due to a relative insignificance of the change.

A particular note regarding the North American Numbering Plan: due to the extremely frequent rate at which new area codes are being assigned throughout the United States, Canada, and affected Atlantic and Carribean Nations, these changes are not listed in detail here. See C E Service area codes page or other references in the North American Numbering Plan section for links to such detail.

1 December 2000 - South Korea - Unified Message Service introduced on +82 30.

1 December 2000 - Macedonia - some area codes change (part of national changes to area codes).

5 March 2001 - Canada - +1 647 introduced as overlay to +1 416 (Ontario).

14 March 2003 - Nepal, extra digit prepended to subscriber numbers nationwide.

22 March 2003 - Brunei Darussalm implements 7-digit national numbers based on area code and existing 6-digit numbers; format of calls from other nations remains unchanged.

April 2003 - Australian External Territories: new digit added to subscriber numbers of Antarctic bases.

4 April 2003 - Kenya: new area codes with some subscriber number changes take effect with a 3-month permissive dialling period.

May 2003? - New numbering ranges introduced for LoneStar GSM mobile service in Liberia.

1 May 2003 - local 5-digit and 6-digit dialling eliminated in certain areas of Estonia, in preparation for conversion to national 7-digit dialling.

1 June 2003 - Sri Lanka begins national renumbering program, to standardise national number lengths.

1 June 2003 - +881 3 number range activated for Ellipso (Global Mobile Satellite Service section).

August 2003 - Tonga will standardise national subscriber numbers to 7-digits, phasing out existing 5-digit numbers.

September 2003 - Grenada new mobile number ranges for Digicel.

September 2003 - Romania: +40 3xxxxxxxx range opened to new fixed carriers.

1 September 2003 - Comoros - new GSM mobile number range announced.

28 September 2003 - East Timor changes to uniform national 7-digit subscriber number format.

28 September 2003 - remaining 6-digit subscriber numbers in Ecuador changed to 7-digit format, completing national change to 1-digit area code / 7-digit subscriber number scheme.

October-December 2003 - Paraguay various local subscriber number changes, with area code changing in one case.

10 October 2003 - Mayotte (then under +269) - SRR GSM ranges announced,

10 October 2003 - Moldova, minor area code changes in Floresti region.

November 2003 - 2 new fixed area codes and 1 new mobile code announced for Kazakhstan.

1 November 2003 - all 5-digit and 6-digit local dialling is eliminated throughout Estonia. All fixed subscriber numbers now considered to be 7-digit national numbers.
