Area Code: 3 digits (formerly 1-2 digits) Subscriber Number: 7 digits (formerly 5-7 digits) Trunk Prefix: 0 International Prefix: 00
Old Code New Code =================== 12 412 14 414 15 415 16 416 17 417 18 418The 7-digit subscriber number format following the area code remains unchanged. Thus mobile number 014 xxx xxxx changed to 0414 xxx xxxx (as dialled within Venezuela), or from other nations +58 14 xxx xxxx became +58 414 xxx xxxx.
On 23 February 2001, the area code of Greater Caracas changed from 02 to 0212 (domestic format), or +58 2 --> +58 212 international format.
On 16 June 2001, dialling of toll-free 800 and premium 900 services was changed to use the national trunk code 0 before the 800 or 900 number.
Most area codes will have the digit 2 prepended to them - that is, 2 + old 2-digit area code.
There were no details on whether a permissive calling period was available, or whether old numbering immediately ceased to be valid upon each change of area code.
Exceptions to the 2+ rule are as follows (area codes do not include trunk prefixes or international prefix and country code):
Region Old Code New Code =========================================== Amazonas 48 248, 296 [see Note 1 below] Boca de Aroa 42 259 Bruzual 47 240 Caicara del Orinoco 35 284 Campo Elías 57 272 Capadare 42 259 Capatarida 66 279 Caracas (Gran Caracas) 2 212 Chichiriviche 42 259 Dabajuro 66 279 El Nula 77 278 Elorza 47 240 Mantecal 47 240 Mene Mauroa 64 279 Mirimire 42 259 Pueblo Llano 73 274 Puerto Páez 48 247 San Juan de los Cayos 42 259 Santa Elena de Uairén 88 289 Santo Domingo 73 274 Tocuyo de la Costa 42 259 Tucacas 42 259 Yaracal 42 259
Note 1: Amazonas area code generally changes from 48 to 248, but new 296 area code has been introduced for this area.
5-, 6-digit subscriber numbers were reported changing to 7-digit numbers, with possible exceptions.
Information is available from a CANTV renumbering page (in Spanish).
Also see document (Word format) on ITU Numbering page.
Also, a report was included in a VHeadline.com story of 23 February 2001, prior to the Caracas change.
