Numbering range information

8 July 2012 - closed 8-digit numbering plan

Existing 6-digit wireline/fixed subscriber numbers in Gabon were expanded by prepending digit '01' to form a closed 8-digit national system e.g. a 6-digit number (xxxxxx) is now dialled as 01xxxxxx. The leading '0' plus 7 digits must now be consistently dialled for all regular subscriber numbers within Gabon.

Since '0' is a standard trunk prefix, calls from outside Gabon only require the '1' digit prepended i.e. a fixed number dialled as +241 xxxxxx is now dialled as +241 1xxxxxx. International calls to wireless/cell numbers in Gabon can now drop the leading '0'. International calls into Gabon are now dialled with a consistent 7 digits following the +241 country code.

The new format was introduced on 8 July 2012, delayed from an earlier plan to implement this 16-17 June 2012. A permissive dialling period for international callers was planned until 28 October 2012, where either old or new format was temporarily acceptable.

2005 - national numbering expansion

Gabon's previous 6-digit numbering will be expanded in phases from February 2005 to a date to be determined.

Within Gabon, numbers will be converted to 8-digit format, generally beginning with digit '0', with the second digit representing type of service or location.

For calls from other nations, when the numbering change is complete, there will be 7 digits following country code +241, where the leading domestic '0' digit is not dialled.

There was indication that the old and new formats would run in parallel during a permissive period whose end dates were not known.

Upon completion of the 2005 numbering programme, telephone number assignments will be based on the following:

27 February 2005 - interim mobile dialling from outside Gabon

As an interim step, mobile numbers are expanded for calls into Gabon by prepending '0' then a carrier digit before the existing 6-digit mobile number.

The leading '0' digit temporarily remains in place. It was to have been discontinued in September 2005, but that phase was delayed by national regulator ARTEL due to technical matters until a later unknown date.

The latter phase of the 2005 national renumbering changes the geographic fixed/wireline numbers.

Domestically, for Gabon Telecom fixed numbers, two digits are prepended to existing 6-digit numbers depending on whether the number is in Libreville:

'01' is prepended for Libreville;
'02' is prepended elsewhere (in the provinces)

Also, for calls from other nations to Gabon mobile numbers, the leading '0' digit is removed, leaving only 7 digits to dial following the international prefix and +241.
