Numbering range information

16 November 2004 - Liberia numbering ranges

Liberia numbering ranges courtesy Cellcom:

Number range Carrier
------------ -------
+231 2xxxxx Liberia Telecom (wireline/fixed)
+231 4 xxxxxx Libercel GSM
+231 5 xxxxxx Comium GSM
+231 6 xxxxxx LoneStar GSM
+231 7 xxxxxxx Cellcom
Mobile/GSM subscriber numbers are considered to have an area code beforehand.

Liberia Telecom's geographic numbers are treated as national numbers with leading digit '2'. Therefore, no area code would be prepended to these subscriber numbers.

Also see Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications announcements (via ITU), particularly 11 October 2004 announcement for new Comium range.

15 October 2004 - Cellcom mobile numbers in service

GSM mobile carrier Cellcom Liberia activated its network with numbers in the range +231 7 xxxxxxx (area code 7, 7-digit subscriber numbers).

Announcements from Cellcom indicated their service was commissioned on 15 October 2004 and successfully launched on 16 November 2004.

Cellcom arranged with Israel carrier Barak to handle calls with points outside Liberia.

25 February 2004 - Libercell ranges announced

Libercell GSM cellular mobile numbers in ranges +231 46 xxxxx and +231 47 xxxxx were introduced.

Atlantic Wireless Liberia operates Libercell.

1 August 2001 - LoneStar mobile numbers in service

GSM mobile carrier LoneStar activated its network with numbers in the ranges +231 64 xxxxx through +231 69 xxxxx (area codes 64 through 69, 5-digit subscriber numbers).

A Libtelco announcement (13 May 2003, via ITU) specified that LoneStar GSM numbers in +231 64xxxxx and +231 65xxxxx ranges were in service, although the announcement was not clear when those ranges were activated. This might have been announced due to reported problems in reaching LoneStar number ranges.

Lonestar arranged with Monaco carrier MedNet to handle calls with points outside Liberia.

Before 2001 (to 2004?) - LoneStar access via Monaco +377

Prior to announcements of LoneStar services on +231 6 xxxxxx number range, LoneStar numbers were being accessed via Monaco using +377 47 followed by a 6- or 7-digit subscriber number. These subscriber numbers were reported to begin with 40, 41, 50, 51, 52, 53, 64, 65, depending on various information sources.

Sources: World Trade Press page, apparently 2001.

Also some reference to use of +377 for Liberia access on kropla.com page.

United Nations Joint Logistics Centre (UNJLC) operations in Liberia used telephone numbers from Monaco of form +377 47 5xxxxx, apparently using the LoneStar access.

This was listed in in a January 2004 UNJLC bulletin. It is unclear if UN facilities remain in place, and whether they have migrated to the +231 6 xxxxxx LoneStar number ranges.

May 2003 - new mobile numbers for LoneStar GSM

On May 2003, carrier Libtelco (Liberia Telecommunications Corporation) announced new numbering ranges for LoneStar GSM mobile service in Liberia.

Number ranges assigned to LoneStar were: +231 64xxxxx and +231 65xxxxx.
