15 September 2001 - +1 939 overlay for Puerto Rico

New area code +1 939 took effect 15 September 2001 as an overlay to +1 787 - both codes are used for subscriber numbers throughout Puerto Rico.

April 2000 - 1 + 10 digit dialling for toll calls within island

Puerto Rico callers must dial '1' followed by the area code (787) and suscriber number for all long distance calls within Puerto Rico by 1 November 2000. A permissive dialling period was to begin April 2000, where old and new toll call formats could be accepted, until the mandatory dialling date of 1 November 2000.

This change was made by order of the Puerto Rico Telecommunications Regulatory Board (PRTRB) in October 1999.

See Telefonica PR - Notice of Network Changes for details.

1 March 1996 - +1 787 replaces +1 809

Area code +1 787 replaced the existing overall Caribbean/Atlantic code +1 809 in Puerto Rico starting 1 March 1996 in permissive mode, and becoming mandatory 31 January 1997. Existing 7-digit subscriber numbers were retained.
